Shed 39/2 Fryatt Quay, Pipitea, Wellington 6011, New Zealand
View on Google MapsVery well organised. Bikes were great. Lunch was very tasty and plentiful. Track was awesome even with a bit of a tumble.
There is a 40 minute ride to the trailhead that I didn't see mentioned. But Sam was great and filled the time with NZ facts
Beautiful ride through a picturesque forest. Nice lunch provided. Picked up and dropped off cruise ship port.
If you like to ride a bike, you must have done this tour. I'm not usually so exuberant, but just great. Because I rate this tour this way , I also take time to make some important comments that are not meant to diminish the experience, but just to give hints. For pick up ,it was arrived from terminal ,bin by ship, talked, this was misleading to me.Had searched for a terminal building in Wellington, but there is not. The many port staff could not help me properly with the given address either. It would have been easier with a note :Pick up directly at,in front of the ship ,where all providers are Pick up was 15 minutes, after agreed pick up time ,the two friendly ladies ,had no problem with it. The trip took about 45 minutes. At briefing you then learn ,there is no guide.Nowhere was written about it before. Was shocking for me ,with little English skills at first . And now comes my replay, it was from the first kilometer fantastic .It always went slightly downhill ,15 km long ,great views, the tunnel passages ,short breath-holding ,Gigantic. In oncoming traffic, in the tunnel ,only with bicycle lamp ,well. The possible stops for a break or view ,just awesome. IAnd now again, a critical comment, which cannot diminish the overall picture. The last 2 km already require ridiculous skill, the route is very narrow and it always goes slightly up ind.But all participants have made the course. As an alternative, still made the offered 10 km to a place, was ok ,but you don't have to,can stay even after the first 17 km ,at the pickup meeting point. And again ,who likes to ride a bike ,must do this tour ,as it is always slightly downhill,no condition is required ,only normal bike riding, should be able to,down to the last kilometers....

Picked us up at the dock with a little over an hour drive to the trailhead. Unloaded the bikes and sent us on our way with a map and an emergency beacon, food, and water. The old "rail trail" is spectacular with its tunnels and bridges and scenery. Being an old railbed, grades are minor and with E-bikes, really doesn't matter. The last section before you get to the pick up point is a little "technical", but was the best part IMO. Weather was dramatically different once we got to the pass. Bring a cheap rain poncho and shoes that you don't mind getting muddy and wet... just in case. My bike battery was almost dead when I got it, but had just enough to get me to their outpost along the way to swap me out. It was at the outpost we learned that they offer days long tours and If/when we ever get back to NZ, that'll be what we do!
We had a great time and the views were spectacular. The trail was very manageable for most ability groups. However, I would rate this a moderate overall ability rating. The last section of trail that is very narrow and had a few technical challenges such as quick turns and loose rock. The wind is a variable that needs to be communicated on your website. Great care needs to be taken with gusty winds playing a role in safety. Lunch was very good and more than enough. The tour guides were very informative and pleasant. We really enjoyed our experience. It is well worth going into featherston and purchased some cheeses at the store across from the Royal Hotel meeting spot. Well done!
Dave was fantastic. He picked us up at the Port and dropped us off after our E-bike experience. The E-bikes were very good. Since it was chilly and rainy we ate a hot lunch in Featherton instead of our packed lunch.
This was an awesome experience start to finish! Isaac picked us up right next to the boat and we headed up the mountain. We got great instructions on how to use the e-bikes and headed out with the lunch, snack and water that was provided. We had lunch at the summit and had the whole thing to ourselves. The only item I would want people to know is that the last 2 km are a little rustic/rough and we started to question if we had gone the right way but we stuck with Issac’s instructions and it all worked out. I would definitely recommend this trip, the views were spectacular!
A litlte confusing getting off the ship as we didn't know they could pick us up right there on the pier but the staff were VERY responsive and helpful. The bikes were great and the ride to the starting point was good. Beautiful trip through the trail, across the swinging bridge and along the river. Overall it was a really fun day and we would highly recommend it.
Even though it rained most of the ride, it was great! All equipment and organization was perfect. The lunch was very good and the scenery was awesome.
