San Ignacio, Belize
View on Google MapsI had no tours book ahead of time at all for my trip and met Reuben in downtown San Ignacio. He was very friendly and down to earth. I decided on this tour, and it was the perfect mix of outdoors plus archaeology and cultural knowledge. Our guide Goldborn had 15+ years of experience. Hearing him talk was reading a detailed history or anthropology book. He was also Maya himself, and knew a lot about his language, the ancient mythology, lore, culture, and local plants and wildlife. Xunantunich is one of the few Mayan sites with a restored facade and carvings, so that was very unique to see. Goldborn described all the details of what was being depicted. For the cave tubing, I live in Alaska and am used to heavy mosquitos. We were encouraged to bring mosquito repellent, but it definitely was not needed. There were virtually no mosquitos. It was a sunny day, but never too sunny or hot. I'd recommend closed-toe shoes for both portions of the tour. Full coverage like a long-sleeved rash guard would be nice, but not needed. Lifejackets are provided. The caving portion was very easy, safe, and child-friendly. I didn't want to slip and fall walking around a cave, like I've heard happen on the ATM tour, so the tubing ride was perfect for me. You didn't need to leave the river and climb around the cave at all, but you could still see everything with your headlight. The food was stewed chicken, beans and rice, and a salad with local hot sauce. Beer and alcohol was available for purchase. Soda and water were provided. The chicken tasted very fresh. There was an opportunity at both sites to buy lots of local souvenirs. The only thing that could have improved the tour could have been some waterfalls. I think the only tour with waterfalls is Pine Ridge Forest. I'm not sure if there are any waterfalls nearby, or if that would even be feasible, but we didn't get the chance to see any waterfalls, and that was a bit sad. Shout out to Goldborn for being the GOAT!

We had a great time exploring Xunantunich and going cave tubing! Our guide was knowledgeable and made the experience memorable! Highly recommend
I’ve been on my share of tours like this in a foreign country and I don’t recall writing a review, but this one stands out and warrants the post. In addition to the things you hope to expect, on time, professional, it was so much more. Our guide was Edgar, and without knowing or wanting to slight the other guides, he was absolutely fabulous in every way. The knowledge of sites and Mayan culture vastly exceeded your average tour guide and was more on par with a university professor, and I am a university professor myself, although in a very different area. But, I felt like I was traveling with a colleague who had devoted years to studying the content and was genuinely passionate about sharing his knowledge. We booked this trip and the water level was too high in the caves so we did zip lining as a substitute. We rebooked the caves a few days later and my kids were cheering when Edgar was our guide again! We were all sad to say goodbye, and I told him if he were ever in Chicago, I’d be honored to be his guide. 5 stars. Stop reading and press the book button!
Amazing way to spend a day visiting a Mayan ruin and inner tubing through a cave that has a waterfall. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. Make sure to wear insect repellent.
Super fun tour! We were picked up at Cahal Pech Resort at 8:30 and took a quick drive to Xuanatunich. The ruins were impressive, and Pedro, our guide, was very knowledgeable about the M "Mayans" (they didn't call themselves that) and their culture. We spent a little over an hour there, then drove a little more than an hour to the tubing area. We ate lunch (rice, beans, BBQ chicken), changed into swimsuits (there are restrooms and changing rooms available there), and then hiked about 30 minutes to the drop-in point (easy hike). Tubing was fantastic, the cave was cool—a relaxing float. Got back to the staging area, showered and changed into dry clothes, then drove back to San Ignacio, arriving back at the resort just after 5 pm. I would absolutely do it again. Again, Pedro was a really fun guide. He taught us a bunch of cool things about allspice, pepper, termites (he ate some), pointed out the Mimosa pudica plant that folds in when you touch it, and many other fun facts. Don't forget to bring money to tip the tour guide—I did and had to go grab it from my room.
This was a great excursion our tour guy Gold Born was great, he was very informative and thought us a lot about the Maya culture he took his time explaining and giving us plenty of time to explore and take pictures at the Ruins. Tubing inside the cave was a fantastic experience and so much fun would definitely recommend this excursion to anyone that comes to Belize
We had an incredible time on our tour of the Mayan site ruins and the cave tube ride. Our tour guide’s name was Pedro and he was incredible by teaching us about history from 1200 BC to learning about wasp nests in fig plants. I learned so many facts from this whole day tour. Would definitely recommend to anyone who’s looking for a fun filled informative day!! Thank you Pedro for making it a wonderful day :))
Pedro was incredible, answering all questions and taking excellent care off our family during the site tour and tubing.
This was a main highlight from our trip! Tour guide Burn was awesome and super knowledgeable about all the history of Mayas and Belize! If you come to Belize this is a must!
We had a great day on this tour! Everything was great and our tour guides were very helpful. They were flexible and allowed us to climb around and explore within the cave, which was also fun. The meal was good too - great day for all ages.
