Lacandon Jungle trekking from Palenque

At first we had entered the jungle alone but when the monkeys (we didn't know what that noise was at the time) started roaring loudly we returned (we didn't see anyone around and didn't feel comfortable). The next day we took a guide for an almost 4 hour walk where we learned a lot about the flora and saw a lot of different birds. We could also see the monkeys up close in their natural habitat. For us this was a super experience and the highlight of our trip.

I would highly recommend going to visit the lacandon jungle and getting a tour with a local guide. It is a stunning jungle, with so much biodiversity and the lacandon community are trying to protect it. Included on the walk is a swim around the waterfall. (Be careful to only use organic sun cream and mosquito repellent, as the other stuff kills the wildlife under the water.) It was quite a drive from palenque with Pacos tours (3 hours including a breakfast stop) There are jungle cabins you can stay in as well. So I wish I had known about the Huts and stayed a night!
