Yolima arranged everything for us very efficiently, and our guide Juan Camilo was excellent - nothing was too much trouble. We had a wonderful day, seeing many incredible sights - geology, plants and wildlife. Highly recommended!
I had the excursion with Juan Camilo who is a very experienced guide. His knowledge of plants, animals and rock formations is awesome and he can explain things in a very interesting way. Moreover, he was very helpful and considerate during difficult parts of the path.
Incredible day. There was only myself, another guy and a woman from Bogota on the trip but it was such a friendly atmosphere it really felt like a day with new friends you make when travelling. Juan provided the tour in both Spanish and English whilst his father drove and oversaw things. I've read the other reviews and can't comment as I wasn't there but our day was very transparent. We knew swimming was an optional extra, as was the observatory. We were also surprised with a small boat ride to stave off the heat. The red and grey deserts are very different but each offer a different experience. I enjoyed them both for different reasons. We ate fruit from a cactus, saw turtles and iguana, traversed canyons and learned about how the red desert formed. When I booked I thought £100 was expensive and figured 'tourism' but by the end of the day I would happily pay that again. Around 10 hours of experience, door to door transport and friendly, knowledgeable people. I thought the whole day was incredible.

We visited the Tatacoa Desert with Green Vacation. Our guide Juan Camillo and the driver Serafin (his father) were wonderful. Serafin is a reliable, calm driver. Juan Camillo trotted with us through the Grey and Red Zones. It was quite exhausting for us at 38 degrees. The Red Zone is definitely more spectacular, though. We had lunch between the two zones in Villavieja. The food was very good. All in all, a successful trip to the Tatacoa Desert. Highly recommended!!!
This tour is a total rip off. For the price they charged us, there was no air conditioned taxi provided in a taxi. When asked about it, the guide was lying by saying that it is better to be without air-conditioning vehicle! Guide Juan was a 20 years old kid. Did not even provide us with water and charged us $10 per person to swim in the middle of the tour. Whole idea was to cheat. Evening time red rock formation was good but that should have been done in the morning. Grey desert walking was a total let down with nothing to see. Please do not pay more than $30 per person for this type of tour.
Green Vacation Colombia will pick you up from your hotel in Neiva, Villavieja or Tatacoa. The full day tour takes in everything you need to see and do in the Tatacoa desert. Take your swimming suit and a towel as there is a swimming pool, filled with spring water, that you can visit for a refreshing dip. There are changing rooms on site. I did the tour on Christmas Day. My guide was Juan-Camilo who was very personable and knowledgeable about the desert plants; rock formations and so much more. His interest and enthusiasm was inspiring. We didn’t do the star-gazing part of the tour as the observatory was closed. It’s a long day’s tour but worth every cent. You’ll see everything you need to see and you can ask the English speaking tour guide lots of questions.
The low rating is only for Tripadvisor and Viator! The tour itself was fantastic but DO NOT book it over either one of those websites. I payed 212€ and while being on the trip I talked to others attendees and they told me they only payed about 30€ booking it through the hostel in Neiva. Tripadvisor and Viator will rip you off and the money you’ll spend on them will definitely not go to the lovely Colombian tour guide.
The service is excellent, the walk with Don Miguel is very enriching for his wisdom. It was great, the scenery and everything in general.
We spent a wonderful day in the Tatacoa Desert. The English-speaking guide was able to tell us a lot about the origin of the landscape and made the day exciting and varied for us: Hiking, swimming pool, finally a visit to an observatory. It was very well received to our wishes and ideas. In addition, the landscape is simply breathtaking. We thank the Green Vacation team for a great experience!
