Guesthouse Naramachi, 30 Kitakyōbatechō, Nara, 630-8322, Japan
View on Google MapsVery unique and insightful experience. The host talked us through the aspects of a traditional tea ceremony including the components, goals and experiences of the ceremony. The setting was a traditional Japanese room within a guest house in a quiet side street, with the host meeting you at the entrance. During the experience you are able to try three different cold green teas, a selection of Japanese sweets and matcha. The sessions ends with a run through on how to prepare ceremonial matcha and a chance to do it yourself. The host was happy to answer any of our questions including providing recommendations for dinner locations and other things to do in Nara. We took his recommendations for dinner and enjoyed some great sushi in a traditional, local focused restaurant.
We had such a wonderful experience. Everything about it was delightful, from the way the host met us on the street and the very traditional old shop. We chose special tea-ceremony sweets from the shop and then tasted different teas in a lovely tatami room. The host told us interesting facts about Japanese tea varieties. Then we were invited to an even more beautiful tea-ceremony room via a perfect small garden. The host taught us tea-etiquette and we were able to relax and be meditative. He madenit fun as there was little competition between us as to who made the best tea. It was a wholly special and charming afternoon and I would recommend it very highly.

We loved this experience in Nara. Mike was so earnest and generous. He shared so much with us and we really felt transported. We loved the tea shop and tiny tea room. We definitely came to understand how the ceremony can make you feel like you’ve escaped the real world for a few minutes. Even my 17 year old son got into it
Very friendly and casual tea master, his English is top! He is a native of Nara and recommended us some great places here. There was a little tea tasting in a beautiful ambience. After that we learned to make Machatee. A great experience!!!
