View on Google MapsJohann came highly recommended—and did not disappoint. He went out of his way to make our Kochin experience memorable, right down to coordinating with our tuk-tuk driver about where and when to meet us at the end of the tour. Johann has a real gift for storytelling. At the end of the tour—two and a half hours later—we were still left wanting more. The concept of the walk, tracing the Rajah of Kochin’s coronation route through the city, was a perfect framework for a truly riveting narrative. Thank you so much. This is a wonderful project.
Our tour was the 4pm -7pm food tour and it was a highlight of our trip. Johan was extremely knowledgeable and personable and the tour took us to places we just wouldn't have experienced by ourselves. We saw spices being ground, ate in a family house and what amounted to an 8 course rambling around various spots in Mantancherry. We learnt about the culture history and of course food
Johann’s tour showing us many of the communities living in Mattancherry was excellent. He is both knowledgeable and passionate. He ran the tour for the two of us. The tour started at 7 am to avoid heat but included welcome tea and lassi stops at places where the drinks were particularly good and much appreciated by us. We asked many questions which Johann was well able to answer. Note this tour does not include Jew Town for which is a separate tour. This tour took us away from main tourist thoroughfare so saw more than would have found on our own. If you want some detail this was excellent.

This walk was the highlight of our trip. And the joy of exploring a new city with someone who knows, feels and understands its streets and structures…cannot be expressed in words. Am so glad that these walks are being conducted to cherish and celebrate a historic port tow . Loved every minute of it…Thank you Johaan!
We had done the early morning cycling tour with Johann and were so impressed that we booked the food tour immediately afterwards. Johann is a lovely person to explore with - he is gentle, easy going and very knowledgeable - he knows his city and he knows where to experience authentic, good food. This was street food at its best - made in down to earth places, eaten by local people who know their stuff, and full of flavour. If you want to connect to Kochi through taste and texture - this is the way to do it. I’ve done street food tours before and this was definitely the best. Thank you for that experience Johann.
We enjoyed this tour very much. For us the decision of making a tour was very much about discovering the flavors of Kerala without worries and this tour surpassed our expectations. We learned a lot about the story of this neighborhood and the different cultures that now live in it. We were stuffed after the tour, so we would recommend to skip lunch altogether!
We joined the Kochi Heritage Project’s walking tour on June 16th, and it turned out to be one of the most memorable heritage walks we've ever experienced—comparable to (and even exceeding) some of the best we've taken in India, Europe, and beyond. Our guide, Johann, is an exceptional storyteller—knowledgeable, grounded, and deeply connected to the layered histories of Kochi. And he curated this extended 3-hour tour for us. The walk took us through Mattancherry and Jew Town, and Johann masterfully wove together the stories of at least 15 diverse communities who once arrived in Kochi as migrants but became an integral part of its cultural fabric. From the Konkanis and their influence on local botany and architecture to the Matathis, Tamil bankers (hundiwalas), Udipi lunch suppliers, Gujarati Baniyas, Nadar oil traders, and Tamil Brahmin cooks—each narrative came alive with rich detail and heart. The walk culminated at the Paradesi Synagogue and finally at the Mattancherry Palace Museum, each space layered with stories that Johann connected back to contemporary life with remarkable ease. This was more than just a tour—it was an experience of belonging, of seeing history not as something distant, but as a living, breathing part of who we are today. Highly recommended for anyone seeking to understand Kochi beyond the guidebooks.
This was an outstanding tour combining history, culture and food. Johann was very knowledgeable. I have been spending 6 months a year in Mattancherry for the past few years, learning as much as I can, but knew nothing of the places and communities he showed us. I will be seeking out other tours from Kochi Heritage Project. Highly recommended.
Great tour! We had Johann for ourselves as it was a bit out of season, which gave the tour a personal touch. He is a very pleasant guide and is very knowledgeable about the history of Cochin and well beyond and engaged in all kinds of questions related to Cochin, Kerala and wider Indian history and culture. We had rich conversations, learnt lots, had fun and a nice stop with street side chai and local snack (forgot the name...). Highly recommended.
I am a frequent visitor to Kerala. But this time I wanted to explore the history of Kochi. Came across the Korchi Heritage Project platform, signed up for a walk not knowing what to expect. A month later, I am still reliving each moment in my mind. Johann is an excellent story teller and very kind. The walk that afternoon in the lanes and by-lanes of Mattancherry –tracking the history and the stories of culture and people – humbled me. Thank you, Johann and team! Can’t wait for the next walk :)
