View on Google MapsTour guides were friendly and it was great to see a village. The tour was a little shorter than what I was told but overall great.
I was picked up at my hotel by a taxi driver who took me about 45 minutes outside of Kigali. There I was meant by two guides and we walked through a village discussing farming, land, and culture in the village. We ended up at a privately owned Cultural center at the top of the village. It was relatively new and parts were still under construction. There we had coffee, visited a replica traditional house, and they showed some traditional tools. We then peeled root vegetables and cooked them for lunch over a charcoal fire. They also served locally made banana beer/wine. It was very chill, we mostly sat around waiting for the tubers to cook. The guides were knowledgeable, but mostly responded to my questions rather than initiating stories . So this is a good tour for someone who is interested in learning about village culture and doesn’t mind being a little assertive in asking questions and asking to see things.
This tour was a wonderful experience and very educational. My guide, Serge, was friendly, knowledgeable, and easy to get along with. He made sure I was taken care of and comfortable throughout the day. The village community we visited was welcoming and I learned a lot! I especially enjoyed watching the dance troupe and learning how local women weave baskets. If you are travelling through Kigali, you need to do this tour!!
Serge was a great guide, but I think it's overpriced for what's included. However, I'd still recommend it, the drumming lesson was definitely a highlight of my trip.
Our Community Experience Tour was great! If you visit Rwanda, you should have this experience. Our guide, Serge, was clearly familiar with the village we visited. There was no uncomfortable sense of voyeurism. We started with a survey of local cottage industries which were notable for their particular skills. We also purchased some of their products...huge win! We then roasted our own local coffee and sweetened it with local honey. We enjoyed a dance from the local dance troupe...so much fun! Finally, we cooked some food in the local style and enjoyed a meal of local cuisine and banana beer. (We enjoyed the banana beer...we'll try to get some once we get home.) This was a great experience and very rewarding to learn the local culture.
