View on Google MapsMy tour guide Mahmoud and driver Ahmed picked me up promptly at 11 am from my hotel and shuttled me west toward El Alamein. We began our tour with pleasant conversation about where I was from and it started on an irritating note with Mahmoud saying I looked Japanese (I’m Chinese American and no we do not all look alike). The Italian cemetery was beautiful, the German cemetery respectful (although honoring Rommel left me torn - I understand he was a Nazi hero but he was still a Nazi), and the museum was a thorough journey through the North Africa front of World War II with a lot of preserved tanks and artillery outside and very thoughtful galleries inside. One last stop took us to the Commonwealth Cemetery, a beautiful and poignant resting place for those British, Australian, New Zealand, Indian and other soldiers who gave their lives in the conflict. At each place I felt a little rushed as Mahmoud kept asking if I was ready to go - and this was less than 3 hours into what was supposed to be a five hour tour. We returned to Alexandria and had a delicious seafood lunch at the Fish Market and then I got dropped off at my hotel. Overall a good experience!
