View on Google MapsFantastic tour and it really brought the castles history alive. Lots of information that you would struggle to find through normal research. Loved it
Julian is an excellent guide with a very friendly manner. His information was detailed and interesting but not pedantic. My husband uses a cane to walk and Julian was very accommodating of his pace and kept us engaged. This was a wonderful introduction to the old walled city. We particularly enjoyed his echo in the Castle room with the frescos. Another couple were in the room and they looked like they wanted to join us. I also like the explanation of the 3 different centuries of stained glass. Julian's story of the accountant's loo was funny and memorable.
Very engaging, but long periods of silence with very little additional information that wasn’t on the guide boards . I also expected a 3.5 hour tour to include the city on the other side of the river but this is basically a walk around the ramparts for the most part. We couldn’t go into the cathedral because there was a mass I. But I would have expected a local guide to have timed our route around this using local knowledge.

Although Julian spoke English , and he seemed to know the history of the city, it was sometimes difficult to understand what he was saying My only complaint was the exorbitant cost of such tour which took about 2 hours I don’t think it was appropriate or if not , certainly overpriced
While there were cheaper tour options available, we (my wife and 15 year old daughter) were only in Carcassonne for a short time and wanted to ensure that we learned as much as possible about this beautiful city. We are so happy that we decided to book this tour. Julien was amazing. His stories very good at keeping all of us engaged with historic details and humorous stories.
Great detailed history of the castle and peoples who inhabited Carcasonne. Description of the changes in architecture!
Julian was an amazing guide - super knowledgeable and engaging! The castle is beautiful and views were breathtaking, but hearing all the history behind it was the best part. Highly recommend this tour!!
We did a 3-hour tour of the city of Carcassonne, including the castle, with Julien. Carcassonne is a very impressive place to visit but you really need a tour guide for the medieval city to come back to life. Julien was able to do exactly that, through this great knowledge of local history and a lot of very interesting anecdotes. His tour is also cleverly set up to see all interesting places in Carcassonne while avoiding the very crowded narrow streets in the center, hence making the tour a more relaxed and pleasant experience. Highly recommended
Great private tour of the Midieval city of Carcassonne! I learned about the different stages of construction of the walls by Roman’s, Celtics, French etc throughout the centuries and got to see the castle and basilica. Very comprehensive and interesting tour!
We booked into the Hotel de la cité in the middle of Carcassonne for 4 nights midweek- The style harks back to much earlier times although I believe it was constructed at the end of the 19th century at the same time as Violet -le- Duc was restoring the city itself.Carcasonne is full of history - I would advise guided tours of the castle (about 17 euros) and ramparts (10 euros) -the guides we had were well qualified & took pleasure in pointing out details that brought the subject to life.As one guide pointed out this is not a Disneyland rebuild but you should know that the city was in a poor state of repair in the 19th Century & about 30% of what you see will be part of the restoration proces. The city is not huge so an averagely fit couple can walk about it and explore the small streets - there are plenty of places to eat - dinner starts at 16 euros for a fixed price menu - there is a michelin star restaurant at the Hotel de la cité ( rather more expensive!- very popular so you need to book early). The hotel is ideally located in the city next to a beautiful medieval church. It was very comfortable - our room was large & we had views over the city from our balcony window. The hotel garden is beautiful -there is also a terrace giving spectacular views over the city -great for night time photos. The staff were very helpful - yes the decor may have been a bit tired in places & maybe someone had to be reminded to put towels out by the swimming pool but all in all a very worthwhile experience and would heartily recommend it. If you are staying at this hotel and arriving at Carcassonne airport, ring the hotel and they will arrange transport as normal taxis cannot enter the city.
